About Gene Shapiro and Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC Gene Shapiro is the President of Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC, a fine arts auction house in New York located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. His early education included the study of art history and the art market at the University of California, Berkeley, as well as Christie’s auction house in New York. Gene holds a summa cum laude degree in art history from the University of Pennsylvania, and a certification from the Royal Society of the Arts in the United Kingdom. Prior to working at Sotheby’s, Inc. in the Contemporary Department in New York, Shapiro’s experience including time spent working and studying at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice, Italy, as well the National Museum in Prague. After leaving Sotheby’s, Gene worked for the Marianne Boesky Gallery in Manhattan, before branching out as a private art dealer. With experience in these various segments of the art-world, Gene decided that the auction house business was still his passion, and opened Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC in 2007. Gene was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and emigrated to the United States at an early age. He speaks Russian, French, and Spanish fluently. He is frequently called upon by collectors, dealers, and governmental organizations for consultations and appraisals of art, and he frequently lectures on the art market as well as provides auctioneering for charitable organizations. For the benefit and protection of his clients, Gene is a licensed and bonded auctioneer in New York City (NYC DCA #1279136) and Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC is a licensed and bonded auction house in New York City as well (NYC DCA #1280204). Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC holds several auctions a year at its New York location, which specialize in selling works of fine art by listed and well-known artists of an international scope, including but not limited to paintings, sculptures, and multiples/editions by European and American artists, as well as artists of other nationalities. A special emphasis is placed on artists from Russia and the former Soviet Union. The auction house publishes the results of each auction on its own website as well as various other auction-result archives, and is proud of having established numerous price records for a large number of artists. The artwork sold is not limited to time-period either, as Gene Shapiro Auctions regularly sells works by old masters as well as contemporary artists, and all time periods in between. With an open-door approach, Gene Shapiro Auctions LLC goal is to provide personal service to all of its clients, both sellers and buyers.
